Last Meals Before Execution

Currently in the United States, a ‘last meal’ refers to a special requested meal by an inmate on death row one or two days before execution. Some states have restrictions on their ‘last meal’ like Florida only having a $40 limit and must be purchased locally. Alcohol and tobacco are usually barred from being part of a ‘last meal.’ Some items on a prisoner’s meal request may be replaced if found unavailable or unusual.

Texas recently abolished the special meal request in September 2011 due to one inmate, Lawrence Russell Brewer, requesting a grandiose meal and then refusing to eat it. He ordered 2 chicken-fried steaks with gravy and sliced onions, 1 triple-patty bacon cheeseburger, 1 cheese omelet with ground beef, tomatoes, bell peppers and jalapeños, 1 bowl of fried okra with ketchup, 1 pound of barbecued meat with half a loaf of white bread, 3 fajitas, 1 meat lover’s pizza (topped with pepperoni, beef, bacon, sausage, and ham), 1 pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream, 1 slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts, and 3 root beers. This inmate ended the 87 year reign of Texas’s ‘last meal’ tradition within their prison system.

Below are some ‘last meal’ requests by infamous inmates along with some documented unique requests.
